Aerial Advisor is an application to help with aligning television aerials accurately and efficiently. The app versions contains reference data describing registered transmitters around the UK, USA, and Australia, together with their geographic locations. It will help you find the nearest transmitter to your current location at the touch of a button and will even show them on a map for you.
The apps even have a huge satellite database embedded to allow you to find the best satellite for your location and then align you satellite dish accurately in the same way as the transmitter masts.
It also contains technical data for transmitters or satellites you are interested in, including power, height, frequencies, polarisation, and channels carried. Once a transmitter or satellite has been selected Aerial Advisor will guide you to help align your aerial to the transmitter mast, or dish to the satellite as well as acting as a spirit level to ensure that you have the inclination or declination of the aerial correct, once you have aligned it laterally.
Main Screen Options
Aligning to a Transmitter Tower
The Aerial Align menu option provides the functionality to help you when installing your aerial, redirecting your aerial due to a new live transmitter, or your mobile aerial on a caravan, or boat. If you simply wish to browse the transmitter tower database without activating the compass or spirit level functions select the Transmitter Database menu option.
Note that it is best to be next to your aerial at the time of alignment using the app to get the best results when you are attempting to complete its direction.
On selecting the "Aerial Align" option from the main screen, you are presented with a list of transmitter areas within the country. These are generally regional and include details for analogue (BBC,ITV,C4,C5) or digital transmitters within that region.
Select the area you are currently in, or that contains the TV transmitter you wish to align to. A list of transmitters within that area will now be displayed. Select the transmitter tower itself from the area list and the aligning compass is displayed.
Alternatively, select the "Nearest" option to have Aerial Advisor display the transmitters for your selected area by distance from your current location.
Please note that to accurately calculate the distance, your phone needs to have Location Services activated. See "Helpful Pointers" below.
Aerial Align (Compass)
Keeping the phone "flat / horizontal", rotate slowly in the direction indicated by the right or left pointers. When you are pointing the phone within an acceptable accuracy of the tower you have selected, a green bar will show. This indicates the direction of the transmitter tower your TV aerial should now be aligned to.
Next, physically align your TV aerial to point in the same direction as that indicated by the phone.
Once the aerial has been aligned to the correct direction, verify the elevation of your aerial as follows.
Align Aerial (Spirit Level)
Use the "Levels" button on the compass screen. It indicates whether your aerial needs to be inclined upward or downward, to align it to the selected transmitter tower.
The Levels option should be used with the phone "on edge" with the Volume buttons uppermost (the screen faces to the right).
When you have selected this option a highlighted arrow will appear on the right of the screen to indicate whether the phone should be tilted up or down. The display will show the difference in angle between the phone and angle of line of sight to the transmitter tower.
Carefully incline the phone in the direction indicated by the arrows until a green bar appears under the angle display. This green bar indicates the correct elevation for your aerial to align it to your selected transmitter.
If the TV aerial you are aligning has a straight edge along it's axis, hold the phone "on edge" against the straight edge of the aerial. This will help to get the aerial elevation more accurately set.
Once the elevation of your TV aerial matches the elevation indicated by the Levels screen (with green bar displayed), secure the physical TV aerial at that angle. Please be careful to preserve the direction alignment you set using the compass in the previous step.
The transmitter database menu option will allow you to view information about TV transmitter towers. It is accessed by the "Transmitter Database" option on the main screen, or the "Transmitter" icon on the toolbar.
Once open, the Transmitter Database screen will firstly display an area selection screen. Select the area containing the transmitter you wish to view.
By default, the screen will display AnalogueTV transmitter towers. If you are installing aDigital TV aerial, press the "Digital" button to display all Digital TV transmitter towers. To return to the Analogue transmitter listing, press the "Analogue" button.
Upon selecting an area, all transmitters in that area are listed. Now select the specific transmitter whose details you wish to view.
The transmitter details displayed, indicate a variety of technical detail about the transmitter tower, for each of the main television channels. The details also list the physical tower location, which can be viewed on a map, by selecting the "Map" line under the "Location" section of the transmitter detail.
Please note that in order to display the map a mobile phone connection is required as the map detail is downloaded from the internet.
This screen provides access to program options and further information screens.
This option allows you to select Metric or Imperial units for distance measurements.
This option will display your current location on a map. If the location is incorrectly displayed as can sometimes happen for a variety of reasons, scroll the screen by dragging in the appropriate direction until your true location is displayed. Use pinch and stretch on the map to zoom in to accurately see your location.
By pressing and holding for 2 seconds on the map, Aerial Advisor will store the location you indicate as your true location and will use it for all further calculations under the Align mode. Please note that in order to display the map a mobile phone connection is required as the map detail is downloaded from the internet.
